
Gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked a mosque in Bushe community, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, abducting at least 10 worshippers, including the Imam.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday while worshippers were performing their Subhi (dawn) prayer. The assailants stormed the mosque, causing panic among those in attendance before forcefully taking several individuals away.
The swift response of security personnel, led by Nigerian Army troops, helped prevent further casualties.
Despite their intervention, the attackers managed to escape with several hostages. The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the incident on Friday. The command’s spokesman, Ahmed Rufai, stated that security agencies were actively working to rescue the abducted victims.
Eyewitnesses described the attack as sudden and terrifying, with many residents expressing frustration over the rising cases of insecurity in the area.
Some lamented that the bandits have been terrorizing the community despite the presence of security forces.
A member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly representing the Sabon Birni B Constituency also confirmed the attack, acknowledging the efforts of security agencies while emphasizing the need for stronger measures to protect vulnerable communities.
Authorities have assured residents that efforts are underway to track down the attackers and secure the safe return of the kidnapped worshippers.
The incident adds to the growing concerns over insecurity in the region, with communities increasingly calling for more decisive action to curb banditry.
